Default 1.9 cdti 150 noise like wind through telephone wires

    Hi everyone,

I've found a few threads that seem to be about similar problems, but there are no photos, so I don't know where to look or what to look for.

The car is a 55 plate 1.9 cdti 150 estate with 75K on.

The noise starts at about 2000 revs, and sounds just like a high wind blowing through telephone wires. It's a totally different sound to the turbo, which I can hear coming in at below 1500 revs.

The sound only appears when the car is being driven. There's nothing at all when in neutral.

Somebody mentioned a split boost pipe, and this is what I would like a photo of if anyone can help. If anyone has a different idea what the noise might be caused by that would be great as well.

I've just cleaned the EGR again, thinking that might be something to do with it, but it made no difference.

I have the spanner light which comes on every time I start up, but then goes off after about a mile. Could this be because something is warming up and expanding to fill a gap?

Any help would be gratefully accepted.

    Cheers everyone,

    Rich.

If the spanner light goes off after a couple minutes of driving I'm pretty sure it will be that one or more of your glow plugs has failed or is failing. As for the noise I can't help sorry but I'm sure someone will be along soon to help

Mine turned out to be a broken flexi.

Looked ok on the outside with no damage to it but the pipe inside was broken.

    Sebadee,

Cheers for the news about the glow plugs. There, doesn't seem to be any problem starting the car though. Is it case of whipping out for a visual check? If so, what does a bad one look like?

    Lee gsi,
Sorry I'm a bit of a novice here. Apart from cleaning the EGR and changing the boost pipes I'm not familiar with anything much else. Is the flexi you refer to part of the turbo piping? A picture of the part in question would be a great help.

    Cheers to both of you.

    Lee,

Thanks for quick picture. Is that piece on the right hand side the down pipe from the manifold?

The flexi looks OK, but I haven't tried moving it yet.

Anyone any other ideas about what might be causing the "wind whistling through wires noise? It definitely sounds as if it's coming from the the engine bay, and is definitely only there when the engine is under load with the car in gear.

    Cheers,

    Rich.

Yes, the sound does stop when I dip the clutch. No idea when the diesel filter was last changed, but the car will be going in for service next week with 75,500 on the clock.
