    Default Air con compressor problems

Not the usual air con problem so please read on.

Obviously with the better weather coming in i've been using the air con more often and it's been brilliant until today.

I was heading into to Dundee and got stuck in some traffic and smelled an electrical/burning brakes sort of smell. At first I thought it was the clutch as I was on a rather steep hill but for a while after I could still smell it.I also noticed that the air con wasn't very cold.

When I parked up I lifted the bonnet and at the aux belt side of the car I could smell the same smell which kinda rules out clutch/brake problems.

Anyone had a similar problem, has the ac clutch maybe failed?

Cheers for the input mate, any idea if the clutch can be changed on it's own

Right, it is definatly an air con problem. I have had a look at the compressor and the centre turns easily by hand so it's not seized. Switching the a/c switch on/off does absolutly nothing and the centre of the compressor does not start turning.

The electrical smell seems to be gone too sooo.... my guess is it either needs regassing and that it just ran out of gas yesterday, a fuse has popped somewhere in the system (it's not the 10a one under the bonnet as i've looked at that one) or there is some thing more serious wrong with it

Relay for the clutch? Maybe that was the burning smell.

If you can (could) smell burning, there is no reason to assume it has no gas; sounds like something electrical has burned out; relay or A/C pump motor

Reason I think the gas may be out is that the compressor won't kick in and there isn't even any waver in the revs of the car when the button is pressed. I thought that the gas had maybe just run out at that moment causing the clutch to partially disengage and cause the burning smell

According to the link below suspect fuses/relays could be:

    https://www.vauxhallproductforum.co....icles/2217.pdf

Passenger side fuse panel: Fuse 2, 23, 25

Then I couldn't tell you what the relays are in the engine fuse box.
