What would YOU do? Advice please, Gents!

My auto gearbox is playing up between 2nd & 3rd. It revs up between gear change, sometimes violently. In Manual mode though, it works fine. Basically, I need a new one. The general opinion is the valve chest? nobody knows for sure. Should I recon the box for £1900. Or get a used one for £1200. Or, make do in Manual mode. All opinion is most welcome! Thanks again for your superb advice.
