Default Big oops or small oops? infor needed

    Hi all

While driving my siggy today the red battery warning came on (followed by plenty of 'oh no', 'damn', 'gosh' and similar words... most begining with F******).

Car continued to drive as normal. Got to destination. When I restarted it the light was off, drove a few hundred yards and it came on again (more bad language).

Currently light is off, if I start the car on the drive and don't move.

Battery connections are OK. My thought is that the alternator is about to die. Just wondered if there were any words of wisdon out there.

    It's a facelift 1.9CDTI 150 by the way.

Alternator would be my next suspect after confirming the battery was producing 12V with ignition off. If the alternator has/is failing, then with the engine idling put a volt/multimeter across the battery the voltage will be less than 14V - if the alternator is failing/on the road out.

Exactly! I had this problem, garage fitted a new alternator but was still not charging the battery . Faulty alternator in the end, twice.

ATS do a alternator and battery test. It's where i had mine done.

For goodness sake don't leave it too long. My alternator died on the M1 in the dark. Electric power steering pump is unforgiving with no electrics

check if you have warrenty, its £275 for an alternator from vaux, its £410 if they fit it, in my case it cost me £25 warrenty claim.

Take your car to kwickfit / local car parts place / etc that do a free battery test that will tell you if its battery or alternator.

if it is alternator expect the following sequence of events.
    Heavey power steering.
    loss of power steering.
radio that randomly tries to find a station,
    loss of ABS.
All warning lights on the dash coming on, flashing
    Lamp failure messages.
    Loss of dash board instaments.
car stops ... but wipers still work.

Made an exciting 6 miles trip to the vaux dealer

    Hi guys.... the update.

Thanks for all the assist and info. Taking all that on board I decided to go for a drive and as expected the red light came on and after stopping the battery did not have enough zip tp start the car. So got out my bag of lollipops and the book that I took to read and called the AA.

Don't you just love breakdown repair cover! They took the car to a garage and told me I would have to pay £25 towards the cost of fitting a new alternator (about £400)

If only all life could work out so... smoothly. (yes, I know... I'm going to hell. But then I am already married, so who cares!)
