    Default Switching off motorway lighting.

For once a brilliant idea !

I had a drive on the M5 at 3 a.m. saturday morning as i couldn't sleep, to find they'd switched the motorway lights off between 12.00 and 5 a.m.
Could never see the point of having miles and miles of lights when there's no or little traffic and as i like driving at night, made my jaunt even better !
Whoever gave the go ahead for this idea, high 5.

    Probably due to maintenance
Legally, on a Trunk Road and Motorway, they MUST be on during the hours of darkness

I've heard somewhere that they were planning to switch off the lights in the quiet hours.

Normally i would agree but some of our motorways are in such a state that driving on them without lighting is tantamount to just asking for trouble .

Never understood why they light motorways tbh, same as traffic lights on roundabouts, complete waste of money.

They light the motorways so you can see the potholes and stand a chance at missing them.

Personally I can live without the lights, as long as there are cats eyes...

They turned the street lighting off on the A63 in Hull a few months ago and it was a nightmare to drive on.

I do think this is a good idea, save money, saves energy.
It would be nice to see that money saved spent elsewhere such as road improvements, bringing down the cost of fuel.
