    Default The alternative vote referendum...

What's everyone's thoughts (if any!) on this topic?

The only referendum in the UK since 1975, the only chance we've genuinely got to make a direct decision on something...

Personally I don't have a clue which way to vote. I understand the arguments for and against, but don't have an opinion.

    Any comments?

    I can't decided either.

Part of me thinks that it's a way to get a candidate up to 50% of the votes (eventually)

but if everyone only selects their preferred candidate on the form. Then the proposed new way of voting is the same as the current one.

Not that it makes the slightest bit of difference - all the party's can do whatever they want when they're in power anyway regardless of the policies they spout during the election process with no comeback till the next election time...

Is this the one where if you don't get enough votes on the first vote the 3rd and 4th place votes move over to the 3rd place and 2nd place votes?
Personally I dont know why voting slips dont just say Lab, Con, Lib, Green, etc..... and everyone votes and the party with the most votes win.....

The major difference between the AV system and the current system is that you have to choose a second preference as well, e.g. your first preference goes to the Conservative candidate, and then you have to choose another candidate as well. Many people don't have a genuine second preference, so they just choose the next party they hate the least, e.g. Lib Dems. If the party with the most votes in a particular constituency doesn't reach at least 50%, then they add up the second choice votes as well. So it could end up that that a party that didn't get the most votes in the first count still wins because they got enough second choice votes. Personally I think the current system is fairer as it more accurately reflects who got the most genuine support.

No, you can just select ONE candidate, with no other preference.

    Yes, maybe.....

Personally I'm always a bit peeved that whichever party gets in ATM they do it with only around 30% of the vote so I think I'd prefer a system where it seems that more people's preferences are taken into account even if it's their second choice rather than their first.
