Default 2.0 dti fuel timing error code p0149

Car has started to run rough on tickover,if i hold the accelerator on constant revs the engine surges. Also when driving ,the car will lose power then pick up with a puff of smoke from exhaust and eml light will come on for a few seconds.
Code reader picks up code p0149 fuel timing error.
Anyone had similar problems and found a solution,If it is the fuel injector pump i cant see it being worth doing.I rang vauxhall and they want £2000 for an exchange unit and it would then need programing.

bump and a bit of a worrying update, changed fuel filter and found tiny shiny metal bits in bottom is that a sign of the fuel injection pump self destructing.

sorry to say but little metal bits in filter is normally a sign of diesel pump on its way out.

try holding the speed @ 80 mph once the engine is upto temp and ee if limp mode happens. metal sounds like uel pump but that could have been sat there for years if you don normal empty it and the fault could be the crank haft speed senor as this controls fuel timing

Car is now running too crap to drive any more,i have changed crank sensor and map sensor with no difference.
I am trying to find a second hand fuel pump,I know this will require programing with tech 2 at the stealers but what info if any do they need from the donor car, need to get this sorted now and get rid.
Gutted because i liked the car and its only done 70000 miles.

i am bit concerned how the metal fragments have got into the filter in the first place, as the pump is down stream of the filter housing.
