Default CD70 Poor radio quality on AM

I was wondering if anybody knows what the problem is with my stereo. When its on FM its ok but not brilliant but when its on AM its terrible. I've been to a couple of stereo repair shops and they've checked the head unit with a different aerial and its fine. I guess its either the leads to the aerial or the aerial base itself. Has anybody had this problem or knows how to fix it

    drop head lining at back
undo nut holding aerial base on
clean metal aroung the base so no paint on it ( inside the car under the headlining )
    redo nut up
    refit head lining
