    Default Won't Start!!!

I purchased a 3.0 V6 Cdti Auto through a private sale about a week ago. Very happy or so I thought.

Everything was fine until I was driving along yesterday and the temp/fuel/revs and speedo all went dead at the same time with pretty much all the warning lights coming on. Thought it was the dreaded CIM unit that may have been the problem. They kept coming back on intermittently and then going again throughout my journey. I was convinced it was CIM as spanner light was on.

So today I thought I'd get it to a garage for them to have a look. Went out to get in the car, put my key in the ignition and no glow plug light on the dash!

I tried to turn the car over anyway only to hear a click coming from behind the glovebox. I thought it may have been a dead battery as I had pretty much every fault possible come up on the screen ie. check left/right brake lights, PAS light, brakes etc.....

Went and got the jump starter but to no avail.... Nothing.... Dead.... Checked the battery and the indication light on it was black not green so just decided to bite the bullet and get a new battery. Popped out and bought an uprated bosch silver S5007 74ah so there would be plenty of power for cranking her up. Took the old battery out and left it disconnected for a good hour so that the ECU would reset all the faults before replacing with the new battery.

New battery goes in. Go round and put the key in turn it to position II and all the same faults as before come up on the screen. No glow plug light again and the same clicking noise when trying to start her up.

I am absolutely baffled Can anyone suggest anything on this one for me? I have cleaned the ABS unit behind the battery. I have removed, checked, cleaned and reseated the fuses in the passenger side glove box and in the boot.

So at the moment I have a car sat outside my house with a brand new battery in, that I can't start with either key. I have even tried leaving 15 minutes before using each key so the immobiliser can reset itself just in case one of the keys has lost its settings. Can anyone give me a clue as to WTF is going on? The once I get it sorted does it sound like the CIM?

    HELP PLEASE

    Thanks in advance gents, Jon.

My first thought would be the alternator has failed... was the new battery fully charged when you put it in

Yep, was checked for me before I purchased today. Even if the alternator has given up would a fully charged battery not be enough to crank her up just to get to a garage?

When my alt failed i charged my battery overnight in order to fire it up the next day, by the time i'd got off the driveway i had lost all power from battery & no power steering or light's etc...
I managed to drive the motor 4 miles & luckily it just cut out alltogether on the forecourt of my mates garage.

I'm gonna go out and get a new voltmeter tomorrow to see whats happening with the new battery. Could this be anything else other than the alternator? I have seen the how 2 on replacing the 1.9 alternator but was wondering if it is similar on the 3.0 as it looks straight forward enough?

Similar issue to me couple of years ago in southern France - reckon it's the alternator.

We tried chrging battery at the outlaws, got it started and then died at end of drive. ended up shelling out 750 Euros for new Alt and Fitting, lucky got it all back from employer!

check the blue fuses in the fuse box in the boot, remove them and refit before shelling out on an alternator.

Have already tried that one fella but to no avail

Thanks to all the replies so far though, they are much appreciated

Looks like I'm gonna need to get it to a garage (somehow!) and get them to sort it. What should I be paying for a new alternator and labour from independant garage? £300-£400 sound about right as I dont wanna get ripped off?

as above check the fuses as if the alt is faulty and was over charging then it would blow the fuses to prevent any damage, not 100% which one it is but heres the fuse locations from my manual

    dash board panel

fuse no 12 battery overload protection

    boot fuses

    fuse 11 and 24 - battery voltage

    engine bay

fuse 24 and 25 battery voltage terminal
