Default Rear blowers (Switch) not working

I noticed yesterday that the switch that turns the blowers on in the rear has ceased to work. I cant find anything on here and cant think what that switch would be called lol. It lights up when pressed but i cant hear the extra fan kicking in as it used to before. when i turn the switch off there is a tick noise that comes from by the glove box. any ideas please guys??
Oh yeah just to add its an 05 cdti vec

    That's the air recirculation switch.

It prevents air from coming in from outside and recirculates the air within the cabin.

The ticking noise will be the motor driven cog that moves the air recirculating flap. You probably have damaged teeth on said cog. Mine is the same.
