Default Internet link help - wife's broke hers

Hi, my wife has got a problem on her PC, XP home 64 bit, Windows Essentials security. She habitually runs a dozen screens with a dozen tabs open on each, and has had problems with malware in the past.
Yesterday it started coming up that Firefox and Internet Explorer.exe could not be found, but it will still sign her in to Yahoo and Windows Live messegers. The other two PC's on the router are not affected. Anyone got any ideas?
She ran a malware scan, came up with 15 including Trojans, which I have doubts about (buy this magic cure and your PC will run at 200%). I suggested uninstalling them, downloading them insyaals off another PC onto a memory stick, then reinstalling them. Didn't seem to work. She's doing my head in now, HELP!

Malware scans always tell your infested.

Have you tried restoring it to an earlier date ?

I would advise running these scans in safe mode, to get a more effective scan and results.

    AVG Antivirus - http://free.avg.com/gb-en/download-avg-anti-virus-free
    AVG Rootkit - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivir...-Rootkit.shtml
    Malewarebytes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Just a side note for a pc of mind some viruses can log keystrokes, so a little tip is to use the on screen keyboard

oh and any sort of advert or rubbish telling you to download this for (buy this magic cure and your PC will run at 200%) is total nonsense, just ignore it.

i recommend malwarebytes anti malware, my mate had a problem with them pop ups saying 'download this as you have a virus' etc. He did, then it gave him a virus...Full install of windows was the only type of recovery fo him. But defo use malwarebytes.

Ok, will try killzilla, can't remember how to put it back to earlier date, and I've never run one in safe mode - build yes, I lose interest once they're up and running. Was very interested in the gaming PC thread, as I like combat flight sims.

Think she did that, then ran some anti spyware "free utilities" from the last time she put it beyond mmy abilities and the shop had to sort it. I build 'em, wife and daughter break them, good job I don't do 24/7 callouts.....but if iut don't get fixed she'll start using mine

Should have an option to boot into safe mode with networking from the boot menu. Long time since I've used 64bit XP though. I without fail, always install Comodo Internet Security on any machine I build along with Spybot Search and Destroy. Both free and offer a great level of protection. The on access scanner on Comodo is great. It takes a while to learn everything but if something starts happening that appears out of the ordinary, a box pops up in the corner asking if you want to allow it or not.

Great pieces of software and both free. With this combination, and having the Comodo DNS servers set in my router, I've not had a virus or anything in years.
