    Default cycling today

Well following this thread where i was looking into getting a new bike for cycling to work i finally got my first training run today on my old bike. First time i've been out in anger for years and did a 33 mile loop from kincardine back along the fife coast up to dunfermline then along an old converted railway line back to kincardine.

Not too hilly thankfully but i made it round, only having one major bout of cramp where my right leg totally locked straight for about a minute (agony). The comute to work that i would be doing is only part of my daily journey but would be 12 miles each way so i am way more confident that i'll be able to do this with more training.

Had plenty of stretching, 2 hot soaks in the bath and freezing shower on my legs and am bit achey all over but a good day all the same.

1st training run - 33 mile! did you not want to try something like a 5mile trip 1st ? I would have had to call the wife out to pick me up!

I started out on a second hand heap off a mate last August and nearly died doing a 3 mile round trip! I just kept trying to go a little further each time.

Like you my commute is a 12 mile trip quite hilly though. The first time I did it it took me well over an hour and my work "mates" were so highly amused that when it was home time I had a crowd laughing at me when I set off!

So I must of hit a nerve with a few fellow midlife crisis blokes and now a few bike in. We go on more and more mental bike rides up stupidly steep hills and team "midlife crisis" has claimed several scalps from so called serious cyclists and athletes. I've just bought one of these babies (clicky) and it's amazing and good for the mad hills round here.

So keep it up and to help with the cramps try these they're amazing (clicky) cramps are mostly down to the loss of salts etc. Good on you for having a pop!

Cheers guys, if i am honest i totally underestimated the distance, didn't take any food with me just some water and a bottle of powerade and at the end i was feeling very rough, being diabetic i was very stupid really. 33 miles seems like nothing but 4 hours on a bike it feels a fair distance.

Surprisingly a am not too sore today, done hillwalking in past and been like john wayne the following morning but apart from a very sore backside and bit of stiffness its not too bad.

Going to cycle into work on tuesday and get lift back to car by my mate then cycle home thursday. Keep bit momentum going.
