Cool my Siggy is not cool!

Forgive the really bad pun, but I need help with my AC. Went to have it regassed and ..... problems. One guy said he could hear the compressor kicking in, another said he couldn't (Kwik-fit... stop laughing). Anyway, after going throough the whole regass cycle the AC is not appearing to do anything. My Siggy is a 1.9CDTI facelift. Any thoughts? (yes, I have checked the fuses). Anyone know a place near nottingham where I could take it (pref not VX)? Any experts out there?? Help!

P.S. I know I will probably only get to use it one day this year... but what the hell! It's there and I want it working!

If the compressor is working you should here the engine note change as it cuts in, as the idle normally drops a few revs. Have you been using it over the winter? Your supposed to run it for 20 minutes a week at all times to keep everything lubricated.

aquired the car three months ago, so don't know the history of the AC. From the sound of it the engine does not drop in note.

The classic failure point in car AC seems to be the condenser - the smaller radiator in front of the engine radiator - as this gets all the muck, fluff, dust and custard from the road as you drive. This gets damaged... coolant leeks... low pressure switch kicks in.... AC non-workio.

If you can ascertain there is no coolant remaining in the system - usually by a very quick poke open of the larger filling valve (total bodge and not healthy) then you might consider removing the condenser... testing by use of a bodged on foot pump to check for leaks.... then (assuming it's FUBAR) replacing the condenser before having the system pressure checked and regassed wherever.

    OR

Have a Google for an aircon specialist in your area who can test your system and identify leaks with UV dye..... you can do any work to replace failed component(s) if you are happy to, before the said aircon specialist checks and refills your repaired system.

Condensers... plenty of generics available... typically £120 - £160 most with a new air drier fitted.

Thanks for the info guys. Will try the condensor first.... then get someone else to sort it out .... hmmmmm maybe I'll just get someone else to sort it out, being a useless git at these things. Hey, I design computer systems for a living, don't ask me to fix AC systems too!

it might be worth noting that most systems will check for leaks before putting the gas in.

I think it's required by law as the gas is nasty stuff.

be careful if your going to mess with it!

Of course now we know that I just can stop myself from one suggested fix:

Turn it off... then turn it back on again

    Hi

I would also guess it could be the condenser. Bought my 18 month old 1.8 VVT last July (only 3K on the clock) and on test drive, noticed AC not working. The main dealer said it had sat around for a while (it was sourced from a liquidation sale) so regassed it and then worked okay - well for a week!

Took it back in and they diagnosed the condenser - agreed to replace under warranty (yipee) - must be a common problem as it was on the dreaded VX back-order (boo). Took until SEPTEMBER to get part so looking forward to a cooler summer (in the car, that is), this year. I always leave AC on during winter (as advised).

I would get it sorted ASAP before the rush starts with the warmer weather approaching (I hope).

    Good luck.

    hi guys,
    similar problem for me..

No noticable kick in of the pump / engine note change.

I've plugged an opcom in to have a nose around, on one of the screens there is a aircon preasure reading.. I have "90" (can't remeber the units) what would be normal ? any other areas on opcom i can check (like if the presure switch is showing as low / no preasure ?

    Cheers, Dave
