    Default 2.0dti won't start after over-revving

I was servicing my mothers Astra 2.0dti today and made a big mistake as I wasn't really thinking straight at the time.

I removed the EGR valve for cleaning, and in the process sprayed a load of carb cleaner into the manifold to try and remove some of the sludge that had built up around the EGR port.

As one might expect, when I started the engine it ran on the fumes from the cleaner and over-revved. I panicked and turned off the ignition switch rather than the sensible thing which would have been to put it in top gear and release the clutch to stall it.

Now, it turns over ok on the starter and fires on a couple of cylinders then just continues to turn over with no signs of ignition. It doesn't sound like there's any mechanical damage - thinking maybe the fuel cutoff solenoid has got stuck becauseI switched off at high-revs, but I can't find where it is?

The opcom does not show any fault codes.

Any help to get me out of this mess would be greatly appreciated. I wouldn't normally make such a stupid mistake but been having a hard time lately.

Go into test mode on your opcom and start a compression test. It won't even attempt to fire, but you should hear any weird noises I think...

maybe stretched the lower timing chain (between crankshaft and diesel pump)?

was kinda hoping it wouldn't be anything that serious. It only reached a little over 5k on the tachometer before dying and there were no bad noises.

Anyway, rather than risk doing more harm, I'm going to get it towed to a friendly mechanic as its obvious my brain is not in a fit state to do anything complex at the moment!

    thanks everyone for the help.

Good news! I decided to have one last go at starting it yesterday before towing away, and after about 20 seconds of cranking it started spluttering and few seconds later ran properly.

Took it for a good long drive and everything seems fine - good performance, no noises or smoke. Mother reports it started fine this morning too.

That was a close call! Lesson learnt I think.

I still wonder why it was refusing to start on saturday after the incident, but was ok after being left for about 24 hours. Anyone care to speculate?

    cheers,
    Paul.

Did you by any chance replace the fuel filter when you serviced it?

No, I hadn't changed the fuel filter this time as I changed it only about 6 months ago.

However, a few weeks ago she did say it had been a bit difficult to start, but by the time I got around to looking at it she said it was now starting fine again.

Perhaps there could be a small air leak somewhere, and switching the ignition off whilst it was revving caused the pump to suck air in through this leak? Does that sound feasible?
