    Default eml question (glow plugs)

went to vx the other day to get some filters changed. my eml comes up sometimes when you start the car and sometimes take a few secs to start but light goes off after a short drive. vx have told me i need new glow plugs and control relay, think they quoted about £200.00 fitted.
was reading other treads and wondered if i did need all that, could i just have 1 faulty glow plug or do you think if vx say i need the control relay then i need it?
was going to get the meter out and check resistance and if i found a faulty glow plug then just change that but like i say was concerned if i needed the control relay too?

Sounds like they have read the fault code and given the quote based on that (software reader rather than mechanic)

If it is the glow plugs, then the nearest to the relay will most likely have changed colour, in which case replace all of them

If the control relay has failed then there will be a reduced, little, or no current on the initial cycle

Take the car to a diesel specialist and they will confirm which it is

So would the glow plugs and control unit be 2 seperate fault codes? Is it not possible that its just 1 faulty glow plug?

forgot to ask if there is any way you can check the control relay output to the glow plugs?

It could be, but the VX diagnostics are simply to read the code then look up the list to see what parts need replacing; so rather be mechanics, they are just reading software
Therefore take the car to a diesel specialist, they check the fault without reading the codes

In most cases it is, but don't bother replacing the one that has worn out, replace them all
Usually the one nearest the relay has worn out, changes to a dreadful white colour

just out of intrest i have measured the glow plugs with a meter, i didnt take them out but this was the results i got 1)0.7 2)0.L 3)276.4 4)0.L
i think 0.7 is the norm from what ive been reading, looks like 3 may be dodgy?

ETA - Just started fine though!

My light came on and stayed on for a while when first got the car. Changed the spark plugs and it disappeared. Start cheap then work up to the more expensive stuff!!

The plugs are about £10 each, just change the lot in one go... otherwise you will end up doing them one after another over a period of time.
