Default V6 3.0 CDTI has a mental breakdown

My car has been quite smokey recently, only noticeable when passing through 2500 - 3500 rpm with the gas on full

Last night joining the M73 whilst the engine was cold (still warming up), got up to 50mph and noticed a sudden complete loss of power
Looked down to see the Engine warning light on
Clearly the engine had gone into safe mode
Looked behind to see an ENORMOUS cloud of black smoke which had clearly been produced by my car
Changed up to fourth gear and kept pace with a HGV, leaving Motorway at next exit

Pulled off the Motorway, then switched the engine off
Waited 30 seconds, warning still on
Waited 3 minutes, warning still on
    Waited 5 minutes, all clear

Took it easy, back on to the Motorway
    However no smoke at all
Once engine temperature was up to 92'C gave it some beans, recreating the same technique I had used to join the M73 previously, and no problems at all

Sadly didn't have the "pedal test" script with me
Parked the car up last night, so tried today, nothing

Looks like some gunk had become trapped, and had then been thrown through the fuel system, the engine having a complete mental breakdown
I suspect this is what ruined the previous SCVs

Went for another run, again no smoke

Get the codes read. We might know more then.

At first I thought it might be a busted intercooler, but then you say the fault didn't come back after the restart...As I said, get the codes read, then we might know whether the fault is fuel or air related.

As above, did the pedal test this morning, nothing

Went to dealership (free diagnostic as car was serviced within last four weeks, but had to wait three hours) this afternoon, also nothing
However, they reckon as it has been 24 hours and the car has been started about 12 times it has probably been deleted

There should be even if the fault is not present.

The EMS can only hold so many starts
Equally, when I tested the faults by disconnecting the MAF, after 20 restarts the previously recorded fault is deleted and the dealership had demonstrated this to me

The same issue occured the first time with the blocked SCV
As I had restarted the engine over 20 times, the stored code had been deleted
However, the second time it occured I drove straight there and left the engine running, but it returned "Unknown fault"

Not too bothered by this one, as whatever it was has blown out the back end!

You started the car up 20 times in the space of 24 hours? Very unlikely.

Other than the smoke out of the back did you notice any other symptoms?

Yes, as had completed three starts on leaving the Motorway, and one more on re-entering
A further two before getting home
Some light use this morning, so that is a further six starts
The pedal test had then been about a further six
Taking the car to work was three, then taking the car to dealership was one, and they started it, so that is another one

    Engine wise, nothing
The smoke has been increasing, but at last months service they advised it was nothing compared to some they had seen (not sure as mine is one of only three Y30DTs they regularly see)

I find this very annoying. My Y30DT likes to puff black smoke under acceleration, but I've no idea why. Previous owner put a new turbo before he traded the car in, I replaced the injectors with new ones, EGR is ok,...
Do you have any idea what might be causing "our" smoke problems?

Just had me thinking about that
Ran outside, so it was a cold start

Listened to the engine and it has lost a metallic rattle it has had for some time, sounds more like it did a long time ago
I put this down to "age and mileage"
At the service they put this down to "age of the injectors on that mileage"

I am wondering if the new fuel filter has trapped something, some old junk has crept past at the service, and that is what pushed all the junk past the fuel pump (which would previously have been trapped by the SCV)

    This noise? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP8f6idrDBw
My mate from Germany suggested it could be worn aux belt pulleys, which apparently have to be inspected when replacing the aux belt (80k I think, 120k km).
Mine is always quiet as a mouse when cold, but when it's hot...well you have the vid...

At the service they say age of the injectors, but why does mine smoke then when I have just replaced the injectors with NEW ones?
