    Default Irmscher Gearknob

After 55,000 miles in my Vec the leather around the gearknob is starting to look it's age, even though it is only 15 months old.

From reading other threads VX charge quite a lot to get a new one and to get it in matching leather will probably be quite expensive.

I have read Graeme's How2 on fitting the Irmscher gearknob, is it definately the case that it needs sawing. I have done some things to my car like cutting the headlining and drilling the rear bumper but taking a hacksaw to my gearstick does worry me.

There was an additional comment on there about hammering the gear stick but it wasn't clear how to do this.

Advice would be great please, also if I replace the gear knob does the mechanism for selecting reverse remain untouched (i.e. lift the lever)

    Cheers

fitted my new silver irmscher gear nob last week
and yes its a bit scarey at first

I pull the leather off, cut the top off with a hacksaw (small one)
and then cut down one side of the nob
a pair of gripps twist and it came off

a lot of sweating and swearing

it looks the part now and good luck

I know what you mean mate, would scare the c**p out of me too, the thought of it, taking a hacksaw to your motor?!! Its all good though, so long as the end product turns out well.

    Good Luck!

I read the same how2 - I think what he was trying to say was to hammer the edge of the gear knob from the underneath, but use a bit of wood or something in between the hammer and gearstick as it's a fairly small target, an unusual angle, and you need a decent amount of force.

Is there any way to easily shorten the length of the gearstick itself? Especially after fitting an irmscher gearknob it seems long and high it would look 10 times better if it were say 10cm shorter and take out the lift reverse mechanism. Why there is a lift mechanism for bottom right reverse gear anyway is pointless

For those that used to have 6 speed, but now have 5, or in my case, 5 speed in the car, 6 in my van! I jump from one to the other and forget where reverse is! lol

the number of times i've gone for 6th in my veccy, lucky for the lift reverse mech!

i used a hammer and a chisel type thing, place at the bottom of the gear knob and keep hammering on alternating sides and after about ten minutes hey presto its off no sawing required!!!!

I just followed the How2 and hey presto it came off in my hand...;sweat: needed to be changed as the leather had come away and let down the whole interior.....
