Right i am totally confused now.

Car went in last week for MOT, Guy behind the desk says right you are now due a service and a cam belt. I said are you sure because car is only around 85,000 miles and book says new belt every 60k or four years and has already been done at 50. He says yeah but because you are a high mileage driver this needs doing every 40K. My question is why the hell did they or vauxhall not tell me before or is this guy trying it on.

He isn't correct in telling you it needs doing if the belt has only done 45K..the new belt would be expected to live another 80k..

BUT!!!!.. i'd never let a belt go that far on any of our cars..a belt is cheaper than a new engine..

if you want to try and get a belt to go to 80k then it's up to you, but be prepared to get your wallet out..

But surely if the book states 60k then the warranty must cover it.

it SHOULD... but watch them wriggle...

35K is a fair mileage for the belt..i'd get it changed..

i don't agree with the mileage intervals VX now use..they have tried 80K intervals before and quickly gone back to 40K when the flood of failures overwhelmed them..It's well documented that it was too far a mileage to expect a belt to last.

I would change it,these days it's not the belt that normally goes but the tensioner or idle pulleys so make sure you get the whole lot done...

Chains are for the life of the vehicle. I have a chain in my 2.0T and I've now checked twice with my dealer (just to be sure) and they have assured me it is not a serviceable item. It's also not mentioned in the service schedule (only toothed belts) so I'm confident that's the case.

There are two different service intervals, the normal one which is the 20k jobbie, but it reverts to 10k if the car is used as.....

    Driving School
    Police Car
    Taxi
Harsh conditions, i.e Arabia (sand) Norway (temp)

Timing belt i wouldn't say comes under this though, but as the others say, when Vx says 60k do it @ 40k etc, top end rebuilds are so expensive and the engine sounds like a bag of nails after repair a lot of the time.
