    Default Emissions light

    Hi all,

My emissions light has recently come on. It has given the fault code p0400 5a which is EGR flow insufficient. Prior to this the car failed it's mot on smoke, it got through with a new fuel filter and a tin of 44k additive.

I have cleared this and unsurprisingly it came on again about 24 hours later. So, am I right in thinking the following:

The EGR valve needs cleaning with carb cleaner as per the how 2s and the gasket replacing with the fiat type.

Or do I replace the valve outright?

The car is a cdti 120 and has done 31000 miles.

And to top it off the drivers dip beam went too!

    Thanks in advance.

I think you have answered your own question, clean it then replace if that doesn't work

It'll go out when you clear the fault code Then assuming flow is fine, it won't log the fault. I'm not sure if this code clears itself after so many starts or whether it's a permanent one that needs to be cleared with a code reader.

The Emissions Warning Light is a reactive warning
Once activated it puts the engine into Safe Mode which applies for 12 hours, the light then stays on for three more engine starts
The next time it applies for 24 hours
The next time it applies for 48 hours
    The cycle then repeats

I doubt it.... I've had my egr unplugged for about a month now and I've never had limp mode and the emissions light stays on continually?

So I can't see why it would cycle through or throw up limp mode?

This is with the EGR Valve still connected
On the Y30DT engine it is a nightmare to access
I eventually realised the cycle being applied, presumably to make it more obvious to the owner / driver
