    Default Plastic 'shield' behind grill

Just fitted my Irmscher grill and when I took the old one off there was a plastic shield type thing.

It seems to sit in front of the inlet area but not against it.

    Here are a few pictures:

Don't think it's fitted on petrol pre-facelifts (definitely not fitted on my previous 1.8 and 2.0T pre-facelifts). So if fitted only to diesels may be something diesel-specific.

Yes, I have noticed this on some engines, so presumably it protects damage to a sensor that sits behind there
    No such plate on mine

Pretty sure it's to protect the top air con pipe on certain engines

I took mine off when I changed my grill. If it has a significant job I think i just might re-fit!

    Mine does have it
It is positioned directly infront of the air intake
I therefore assume this is to prevent water being taken in directly in large volumes, which could in turn seriously damage (a diesel engine)

Note that at the bottom of the air filter box there is a drain point, so make sure this is clear and connected to the pipe

Not seen it on the MK4 Astra so thought I should ask.

Just seemed strange having something infront of the inlet.

Will leave it where it is then
