Default My little fuel economy test

Have used Supermarket fuel for ages now, usually Morrisons but occasionally Tesco and at best, was getting 46 (maybe 47 sometimes at a push) to the gallon. Thought I would try esso for a few tanks to see if the myth had any truth in it (that branded fuels give better mpg) and after week 1 using Morrisons fuel, managed about 46.011 something mpg.

Week 2 - Esso (filled from half on the gauge - took 36.36L BTW so top half on gauge is bigger!!) and got mid to high 47mpg.

Week 3 - Esso again and noticed on the gauge I was getting further, 40.21L to 449.3 miles (50.7mpg)

Week 4 - just started so will love to get higher into the 50's!

Spurred me to do some calculations.

    Approximate figures

Esso @ £1.379 per litre to get 50 mpg = 12.35 pence per mile

    Morrisons @ £1.369 per litre to get 46 mpg = 13.51 ppm

    Local Gleaner @ £1.449 per litre to get 50mpg = 12.97ppm

Even if Morrisons are doing the '5p off per litre if you spend £40 instore' works out at 13.21ppm

So, guess I'll not be buying supermarket fuels again!

This is all worked on tank brimmed to tank brimmed, not on the BC which showed 51.3 mpg on supermarket fuel and 53.2 on Esso! Hate standing there like a tool trying to squeeze as much fuel in as possible, takes ages after the first click!

The BC figres are not accurate, they are more a guide than gospel.

Best way to work it out is full tank to full tank which is how I got my figures.

And I have a CDTi 150, not the 2.2 There will be a difference there too.

Anyways, my car seems to work better on branded fuels, not the supermarket stuff. Might be worth trying it yourself if you do the miles!

I have got just under 1/2 a tank in my car, and i am planning on doing the same when its time to fill her up.

More and more people are saying they are getting better MPG with non supermarket fuel, so its got have some truth somewhere.

I have followed your lead and gone back to Shell FSD from Morrisons, and notice she is a slight bit smoother when cold less jumpiness, and economy has risen slightly but won'r know for certain till the 12th when I next get to give her a decent jog down to Bradford / Manchester area

mine has actually seemed to exceed 700 per tank since putting in Wynns additive (getting 5 to 60 miles more). A road I pass on way to owrk has shell on one side and Murco on the other so mine is getting half of each depending when needed (is what I meant)

2.2dti tesco full tank get 43mpg, Shell I get 45/6mpg

This is calculated by taking the litres bought divided by 4.54 (Normally 11gallons) and then divide that by the mileage

Someone once told me that the supermarkets buy their fuel from the big names, and if your in the business of selling fuel yourself, your not going to sell a grade stock to competitors.
