Just got back from a slow drive around in the Signum and its a nice 15 degrees outside. However the engine temp gauge was sat at 90-92 all day! The 2.8's run hot but usually after a minute or two up above 90 they flick back down to around 88-89.
I was about to pop the bonnet and the fan did come on, although it didnt sound like it was on any sort of high speed. The temperature eventually went back down to 88-89.
Put inspection mode on the screen on the drive back and it was showing 96 degrees with a heavy throttle upto 70mph then as I came cruising into town it dropped back to around 92. Obviously these show up 5 degrees less on the temp dial.
Pulled up at home, switched off and as always something bugged me... the engine is red hot, but the fans dont come on? Now most of my other cars have had the fans come on once the engine is shut off on a warm day...
Could you guys let me know if I'm missing something here... Do you often hear your radiator fans coming on when sitting in traffic etc on a hot day? And do they come on once you switch off and lock up?
Not sure if its just the temp sensor being a bit erratic as they are prone to be unreliable with temperatures, but need some reassurance before I start taking the engine to bits. Not checked the thermostat either as of yet as I figured if the rad's aren't heating up the fan sensor might not be picking up the higher temperature? Didnt have any issues in winter though.
Does anyone know if these thermostats lock open or closed when faulty?
Lots of info... all help appreciated
