    Default Focus or Signum?

Looking at getting a new motor in the next few months and like the look of the 06/07 plate Focus and the Signum.... Drive a Vectra C at the moment with a 2.0DTI engine....

Have the use of a Focus as a pool car at work and like it and have a few quesitons for the Signums guys....

    1. Can you fit 3 persons/adults in the back of the car? Looks quite "cosy"!
    2. What is the 1.9CDTI like compared to the 2.0 DTI? Or am I better off with petrol?
    3. Is there anything to look out problem wise for that is model specific?
    4. Is a good car to own?
    4. Is the boot bigger than a Vectra C
    5. What level of trim offers in your opinion best level of kit for the money

    Cheers

    1, no not really.
2, much better on fuel IMO. The 120 is the one to get as it's far less troublesome than the 150
3, no they are pretty good. Basically the same as the vec.
    4, yes
5, about the same but the seats fold completly flat where the vec ones don't.
    6, design or elite.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

    1. Youll fit 2 adults in the back with more room than any other vehical in its class in much comfort, each with their own indervidually tilt and slide adjustable seats. However, its designed for 2 with what can only be described as an emerancy third seat in the middle for when your really have to put a third person in. You have to flip over the middle storage area to reveal the seat pad, which is not comfortable at all.

    2. Each to their own, but its evident from the feedback on this forum alone that the diesels suck for reliability, absolutly no argument. There still a good option if your willing to manage the repair and prevention, but if you want less hastle, stick to petrol.

    3. Similar to vecs, heavy on the bushes and springs.

    4. Absolutly love the signum, wish Id bought one years ago. Love the versatility for its size. If you dont need the size, buy a nice coupe instead.

    5. boot space is brilliant, and when the seats are down flat, it will eat anything you through at it. More space than many other manufacturers estates, but not as much as the vec estate perhaps?

    6. The cost of an elite over the other models is neglidgable and you get lots for your money. Thats the model to go for, but the design which is half leather has nearly as many toys and slightly firmer and lower suspension. A lot of elites are auto though, and whislt theres nout wrong with that, if you prefer manual you may find them harder to find. Also note if you decide on a 2.8 petrol, you can only get an elite in auto, if you want a manual youll have to look for a design. I dont know if this applies to other engine options?

Personally the signum is a far nicer car than a focus, but if you have to get three in the back, you need to look at something else.

Yes. I converted the middle seat to a proper seat cushion, which is more comfortable than the equivalent seat in a Vectra, Focus or Mondeo et al, for the grand sum of £70. The outer rear seats on mine are the standard individual ones that slide, tilt and recline on their own.

    Engine : 1.9CDTi

    Year : 2005

    Mileage : Lots

Stay the hell away from the Focus.

    1) There was a fair bit of room in the back of the Focus but wouldn't want to try and fit 3 in there.

    2) DTi's are good engines. Mine's still going strong on 200,000 miles. No rattles or anything. The CDTi's are probably a bit more efficient than the older engines but the DTi's do seem to have less problems. No bad manifolds etc. Just tends to be fuel pumps or boost hoses going.

    3) Not really.

    4) Don't see why they wouldn't be - they're smart looking cars.

    5) Not that I know of but as pointed out, the seats go fully flat in the Signum.

    6) Elite or SRi

In regards to the Focus, stay the hell away. It's loud, can't hold itself together if you throw it round a corner, really not cheap to run (I had a 1.6 that was doing about 32MPG with normal driving), the gearbox was like soup, little things like only one of the cup holders in the middle is useful because the lid for the box in the middle covers the other one, the one touch windows that only work winding down, the vibration through the accelerator at motorway speeds, the slightly naff stereo, the small steering wheel.. I could go on.

It was easy to park though, got a turning circle like a London taxi.

Have you guessed I'm not a Focus fan?

    1. Nope not comfortably
    2. If treated well the 1.9 CDTi is as good as any in either 120 flavour or 150 BHP
Service history and DMF concerns, if possible buy with a warranty
    3. Oh Heck yes and the Vectra is even better (awaits lynch mob )
    4. Depends I would say having looked at both they are slightly different in nature
    5. Elite or design

After owning both I can say they are very similar but the vectra just isn't as well screwed together with loads more bumps and rattles. The rear seats don't fold flat in the hatch which makes it difficult to get large items in there as you just can't push them in. The rear seats are better for 3 adults than the signum, as even with a middle seat conversion its just not wide enough.

Plus the signum is normally cheaper!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
