2004 1.9 cdti 120 signum.
just done my glow plugs after 110000 miles using good fuel always. took me 3hours to do. you need torx, allen keys 1/4" socket set with 10mm deep socket with wobble bar and extensions. egr had to come off, used wynns egr3 spray to free one tight plug and clean egr whilst off, removed boost sensor and engine cover. needle nose pliers needed to remove connectors and refit them, a good light also needed, very fiddly but as a retired engineer possible without belting the wife! if you aint confident with tools dont attempt it.
Usually if the glow plugs are faulty then the glow plug light on the dash will stay on for a few minutes after starting, possibly should also have a trouble code
As this was started in March 2011 im sure he has done it by now.
