    Default 2004 3.0 V6 CDTi Boost issues!

    Morning folks!

Got an issue with my 2004 v6 cdti sri!

Started last night, when the engine was red hot after a motorway run.

I'll give you a scenario... say for example im at 1,500 rpm in 2nd, and put my foot down, it pulls great.. boosts perfectly.
However, If i put my foot down, and then change gear whilst the turbo is on boost, and put it into 3rd, then put my foot down again.. there is NO boost for about 3 - 5 seconds; not even an attempt to spool up!

I have a cheap chinese op-com thing, plugged it in - no codes.

I have checked desired fuel pressure against actual pressure - its almost perfect - so i believe this rules out something such as fuel filter blockage/poor flow . *although this was changed about 2000 miles ago*.

2nd thing I measured was desired boost pressure against actual boost pressure, this is worryingly different, I can't remember the unit that is used to messure it, but the difference was about 15-20 'units'!!

Is this normal?? I've checked the boost pipes (the one's that I can see anyway, and they're all present and correct, and i can't hear any abnormal hissing noises when it does actually boost!

can anyone shed any light on this at all?

    Cheers folks!!

    Sounds correct to me
When I change gear, with the windows down, the turbo cannot be heard for a few seconds
The revs need to be around 2000rpm, and typically during a gear change it wil fall below this causing it completely shutdown then pause

cheers for your reply, the reason I posted this, is that the car has never done this before. When i changed gear, the revs were sitting at about 2000 rpm, so normally turbo would be boosting.

Also, there was one incident where it came on boost, dropped off, then came on again, all in a period of about 6 seconds.

    Weird!!

Could you elaborate on this, I would be worried if it is physically red
If you are referring to the temperature gauge it should sit around 85'C, but will rise once you have come to a stop (and if you switch the engine off it can rise quite sharply)

The only time mine did this was when it had been sat for about 2 months. After a good Italian tune up it was fine! I put it down to the variable part of the turbo had got stuck over time and after a good thrashing it was fine again.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Mine sometimes does this too, I've no idea why though...turbo seems to be boosting fine, the engine doesn't judder when this happens or anything. If it happens, it ALWAYS seems to happen after the gear change just like in your case...

The boost is measured in bar I think.

I suspect there is a feedback signal to the boost module from the gearbox linkage / position
One thing I notice in some gear changes is a sudden WHACK shortly after the gear change, typically where the turbo has been off for some time, and the speed has been constant

Such an example is following a HGV at 50mph on single carriageway NSL (HGV speeding)
This can often be difficult, so with local knowledge wait until a suitable location, whilst driving in 5th gear
Pull out, clear road, down to 3rd gear, wait for it, wait for it, WHACK, aaaaaarrrgghhhhhhh!

Has diesels got dump valves or recirculating valves that dump the boosted air to atmosmphere or back into the system, i know that diesel turbos dont produce as much boost as a petrol car but i had a escort rs turbo before and my dump valve went faulty and the boost pressure was stalling the turbo during gear change.
