    Default EGR blanked, but...

It feels more responsive and quicker through the gears, but there is a smell of soot now when i start up. Its not diesel, its defo soot.

The EGR had a bit of black on when i took it off.

I blanked off from the exhaust end, the oval blanking plate.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Personally i thought it might just be the remainder of the soot in the manifold getting blown out. The blank has only been on for 3 days. The spanner light came on, and now am left with the EML light on. I can live with this if its the only problem!!

Am thinking of a remap at some point, but would someone like MAS just take off the EGR system? If so, how much?

    Cheers in advance guys!

Did you fit a gasget on both side of the plate? I have never smell any soot on my cdti when a have blanked the egr. Your eml will turn off if you drill a 6 mm hole in the plate.

MAS can delete the egr from your map and turn off the eml-light in the map. I think someone here has paid around 200 £ for the remap + egr/dpf off.

Don't bother with a 6mm hole, what would be the point of blanking it?

MAS is about £100 for EGR/DPF removal, or £200 for EGR/DPF removal and a remap, bargain IMO.

As above, the smell of soot could be a not properly sealed joint, you could leave it and it my coke up, or fit two std gaskets either side of the blanking one.

Yip there is not a proper seal imho somehow.

Out of interest what side of the valve did you blank? And also has the valve been cleaned - ie be removing the solenoid at any point?

This is the plate i fitted...

    Blanking plate

I fitted it underneath the EGR, the exhaust side. There weren't any gaskets involved but it was tightened quite strongly. I thought by putting a gasket on, it would of just burnt off due to the heat.

Is it better to blank off the manifold side instead? I have seen the part numbers on here.

What do you think guys? Should i try the manifold side instead?

That blanking plate is the one I bought, but I bought two oval gaskets and a square one form the dealers for when I get that plate fitted.

The plate is said to seal BUT metal to metal never seals and the heat and pressure from the exhaust gases will only force their way out. Get it sorted m8, that is dangerous.

Will look at it 2moro and report back.

Its just a sooty smell at starting. There hasn't been any kind of smell afterwards.

Will order the gaskets from Fiat methinks. It didn't seem right blanking the exhaust side as it seemed to be starving the EGR from the air it needed. I think blanking the manifold side might be better.

Can only try though. Just don't want my shiny new inlet manifold all gunked up.

Spot on, just get a couple of OEM oval gaskets from the dealer and fit either side. They won't burn off, as they have them as standard anyway with no issues.

Blanking the exhaust side is fine, the key is sealing the manifold hole, so if the EGR itself is sealed (which 95% of the time they will be) blanking the exhaust side is fine and much easier.
