    Default Shotguns

Does anyone have a shotgun license or knows the ins and outs of obtaining one. I went shooting (clays) at the weekend & really enjoyed it. The club we did it at were quoting £350 to do a course that would pretty much ensure you got the license once you applied, it sounded like a nice little earner to me.... so I was wondering if doing a course was essential or not and what the legalities of shotgun ownership were.

I don't have one myself but my dad has and I'm pretty sure hennever went on a course just applied for it but I do know if ur going to keep shotguns in the house they have to be in a secure gun cabinet which is bolted to the floor and out of view of visitors they come round and check every year or so

If you are serious, join the club
The biggest (ha, that's a joke) will be passing the police check in order to obtain the licence
However, if you have no experience and attend courses then this will be in your favour

Clubs usually advise to join for at least 6 months before applying for your licence
Sadly by the time your licence approval has come through it can be a whole year

The annual house checks are quite rigirous (compared to the person checks)
As above, the safe must be secured to the building structure and not clearly visible, typically a secondary room

    Hi

The best place to start is a local clay shoot, get to know a couple of people there. A lot of clubs run what they call have a go days and they will help you obtain you licence. Also talk to your local gunsmith/shop they are a minefield of information, they will become your next best friend .
When i started i had some essential lessons in firearm safety,eg handling the gun, loading ,unloading etc.Last but not least check your local police website for your area and speak to your local Feo (firearms enquiry officer),they dont bite and are there to help. You need to be aware that if you have any convictions in the past 5 years you chances are greatly reduced but not impossible to obtain your licence providing it's nothing drastic.
Remember though that it becomes addictive just like modding your car,i now have several firearms shall we say.

    Any questions pm me.

    Regards

    Steve
