Default Huge repair bill..... what would you do?

I need some advice on what to do. I've had my 03 2.2 DTI SRi into a local garage this morning to check a knocking noise. They've called me and told me that the car is dangerous and must not be driven! The list of urgent repairs is as follows (these are notes I've made on the phone so the terms may not be correct):

    • Drivers Rack Arm - Shafted
    • Steering Rack - Leaking (beyond repair)
    • Ball Joints - Shafted
    • CV Boots - Leaking
    • 2 Tyres Illegal - Caused by steering rack
    • Tracking - out
    • Exhaust Bracket snapped on Cat - Been welded once before can try weld again
    • Brake pipes - front to back completely shafted (dangerous!)

The garage are unable to give me an accurate quote as its very likely they'll find more problems when they start the work but we are looking at a ball park figure of between £1200-£1400. They've said on top of this they can see signs that more work will be needed to the rear suspension within the next 5-6 months but didn't elaborate on what that work was and to be honest I was so completely shocked by the extent of the work required, I forgot to ask!

We've only had the car 12 months and so far its cost almost £500 in repairs (that doesn't include a major service). The garage have suggested selling the car rather than repairing due to the major cost but I just don't know what to do for the best (they don't do sales so I'm sure they're not looking for a cheap way of buying my car). If this was your car would you pay out for this knowing there's more to come or would you sell up and move on?

I'm going to book it in to another garage for tomorrow but I don't think they'd be making this up as they've been recommended by quite a few people.

Hmm, I'd want a second opinion, but if they've no incentive to rip you off. Does sound a hell of a lot of things to go all at once - did the car drive and feel right before it went in?

Its felt awful for a while. Its been pulling to the right since a spring snapped but originally I put it down to the broken spring, then I assumed it was the tracking (had that done 2 months ago) and then I put it down to what ever was causing the knocking...

id get a 2nd opinion tbh mate...1200-1400 seems an awful lot for that stuff.
drivers rack arm takes 15mins to fit and costs approx 15quid
my rack was 120 supplied and fitted
balljoint/bottom arm approx 50quid plus fit
cv boots are pennys to buy
tracking would need done with the new rack anyway, cost my approx 30quid for that
not sure what tyres you have but assume standard..will be approx 150ish for two tyres?
brake pipes i realy dont know a price tbh

seems they are charging a hell of alot mate.

What!! I'd be buying a cheaper rack mate! If need be second hand as well bit of a job to fit I imagine but will be way cheaper. I'd go to another garage mate, that's way to much IMO
