    Default road noise

    hi...

iv got a lovely set of 5 spoke 18" wheels that i want to put on but jesus they do make some noise!

i took them off and put the standard 16" steelies and it went from a tank to a roller instantly.

is this the norm for bigger wheels or is it cos mines just a LS model and hasnt got very good sound proofing?

the wheels do have 225 40's on and iv read that the 40's do rumble a lot but iv no idea of this is the case on mine.

its s shame to get rid of the wheels but i cant live with that much rumble so i wonder if anything can be done about it cos im sure the elite or sri's and such dont make this much noise with 19" snowflakes on.

Cannot be specific....but my thoughts are this.....

Ultra low profile tyres mean higher tyre pressures...why?? because there's not much tyre wall depth to cushion the effect of road imperfections.....
    bad/uneven surfaces/potholes & the like....

& coupled with lowered suspensions...springs have to be stiffer & shock absorbers stiffer ..why????.....to prevent to much travel on such road surfaces....

Result..Bone shaker hard ride..body jarring thud /bump over bad road surfaces....except on the smoothest of road surfaces....& tyre noise ....

OK I appreciate some tyres are noisier than others ...tread pattern etc..

The standard Vectra suspension is pretty stiff...speaking from experience with our 55 reg Facelift Vectra Club Spec Hatch with the Z18XE petrol engine...

So that's why I've never bothered with lowered suspension/ultra low profile tyre mods....

No doubt some of the guys on the forum are very happy with the mods...

    Cheers

    Pretty much agree with that
In order to increase brake and fuel efficiency larger wheels are now more common
With larger wheels come larger tyres, resulting in more contact surface area with the road
Suspension has also become more complicated, resulting in more noise transmission

How old are the tyres on the 18" wheels?
    What brand and specification?

Some people like the noise the tyres make, I know that simmo3187 likes the sound of his wheels droning, as do I, esspecially on a new road surface

In order to increase brake and fuel efficiency larger wheels are now more common
Is this true? Larger wheels give greater fuel economy?

i think youll find that its your tyres, some are noisier than others, i know the Goodyears i have on mine are super noisy & they are standard wheels & tyres fitted to the 2007 Exclusiv, but fitted to my 2004 1.8 LS. recently changed the front tyres for Champiro ones & have noticed they are a tad quieter, cant wait to change the rears when they wear out.

Larger wheels might help when it come to gearing and thus economy but I doubt they help when the tyres are wider(more rubber contact on the road is always going to cause more rolling resistance and more noise).
To the OP I just went from 215/55 16's to 215/50 17's and actually noticed less road noise. A lot of it comes down to tread patterns and how badly the tread traps air between the thread and the road.

Totally agree, probably more to do with the tyre quality and tread pattern, or possibly the wheels themselves are made of a stiff alloy, softer alloys absorb more of the road noise
