My non-direct will rev to the stopper with out slowing, although in first she slows @ 6000-6500 but not in any other gear. This is like she is making the cutter smoother for that gear, bit strange but does feel like it is the computer doing it for a reason.

My 54 direct seems to have days when it won't pull at all and other days when it goes really well. It got character!

If I put some Sainsburys super in would it be worth disconnecting the battery for a while to give the computer a chance to re-learn or doesn't it work like it used to on the Vec 'b's?

Mrs GSi's old 2.2 benefited from a K+N panel.. really transformed the engine.. no flat spots and straight up to the limiter with no holding back..

Got ours from Bainie as he said it'd transformed his old 2.2... he wasn't wrong..

I think Mark's right, it's about the car being able to breathe properly, a K&N filter and the airbox mod will probably sort you out. Although mine's not a direct, it has always revved to the redline with induction kits of various types fitted, even before the remap (just gets to the redline quicker now ).

    What's the airbox mod?

Not keen on the K&N for two reasons - read elsewhere about the oil coming through to the MAF and that they let lots of fine dust through which causes lots of wear in the engine.

PS - I think that mine will rev, it's just that beyond the 5,500 (or so) mark it just seems to loose interest (urgency). Maybe it's just a relative observation due to it being so keen and urgent feeling up to that point i.e. between 1500/2000 to 5500.

Airbox mod - there is a plastic half pipe under the air filter, this restricts the air flow, if you look at the underside of the filter you'll see only half of it is dirty. The plastic half pipe literally pulls out, it'll clip back in again if you need to put it back.

Can't see that there would be enough oil on one to make it through to the MAF unless it's been cleaned and re-oiled using far too much oil. As for the ultra fine particles, that's what your engine oil and filter are for, to keep the system clean internally, as long as you're servicing and changing oil/filter regularly I don't see this would be an issue worth worrying about.
