Default Vauxhall - "Free software update"

I received a letter this week from Marshalls of Knebworth (my local Vx dealer who took over my cars records from the dealer I bought it through when they closed down) to say that Vauxhall are doing "FREE" software updates and to phone them up and book it in for that and a "checkup".

Now, I have a couple of concerns over this and want to see what other people think.

Obviously this is an excuse to get your car in and try and find other things wrong with it to persuade you to get that work done too, I don't have an issue with that as I would never use a dealer to do work on my car so would just refuse.

My main concern however is, what software exactly is it going to be upgrading, will it affect my re-map, whilst this is normally not an issue as I can replace the map myself would it possibly change anything on the ecu that would stop the map re-applying.

Is it worth fixing something that "ain't broke".

Any thoughts or experience with this?

Phone them and ask them what exactly the free update software is and what it will correct; and see if they can answer that question lol.

I have to laugh at dealers. Lookers in Selly Oak (and I will name names) who quoted me £800 nearly to fix a timing chain that was a real concern to their techy a few months ago, who also added another £300 to replace one rear broken spring keep texting me asking if they can do my MOT.

Now they have to realise that there was nothing wrong with my timing chain; all that was wrong was a loose wastegate; and more to the point the week after when my eibachs went on suprise surpirse no broken springs at all!!! They are all in a box in my garage waiting to be cleaned and sold on.

So they wanted to charge me in the region of £1200 for parts and labour for things that did not need doing!!! w@nker$

I do not trust dealers as far as I can throw them.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't trust Marshalls servicing department as far as I can throw them either. These are the guys that tech 2'd my rear electric windows in originally on my old saloon and they only half worked when I got it back and they told me and I quote "you'll never get it exactly how it would from the factory, that's the best they'll ever work". It took Dean (Plasma) 2 minutes to get them working as they should be when I met up with him about it.

But on the same vein if this software upgrade could be beneficial then it's something I'd want to look at. A call to them might be worth doing but just wanted to see if anyone else had received a letter (it looks like a standard Vauxhall letter, I'll stick a shot of it up tonight if I remember) or even better had experience of having this "upgrade" done.

Yeah, that's my general thought pattern too, but I'm still very curious to know what this "software upgrade" is. Might give them a call anyway lol

These software updates are normally part of the normal service routine if you used a VX main dealer. Sure there was an update to the fly by wire throttle at one point. Youd be better contacting the guys that did your remap and seeing what they say about it.

Might be able to check software revisions on the laptop and see when it came out and the changelog for it
Plasma's Tech2 services are now partially open and able to provide services

If you have a remap, I doubt if the software update would be compatible – no evidence to back this up, just my thoughts.

I can see either the software update overwriting the map or the update failing to load.
