Hi,
Not sure what topic to post this under, so hopefully I can get some advice on the general thread.
Had a problem with my car over 3 weeks ago, basically it would not start.
So, put it into a local independant garage. They had a quick look at the car I went into to see them for a chat and diagnosis. They said there was fuel getting to the high pressure fuel pump, but no further and that the fuel pump was not producing enough pressure.
The fuel pump was still on the car at this time. I told them then that I could get another fuel pump within 24-36 hours at a cost of £187.50. This was over a week ago. I phoned them last Wednesday and asked them if they wanted me to order the fuel pump, they said not yet as they were checking the fuel pipes etc first.
I got a phone call on Thursday from the garage saying that they had sent the pump away to be tested (without my authority).
Got a phone call on Friday afternoon from them, saying that they had the results back from the diesel specialist and that the fuel pump was definetely not working and it would cost me £90 for getting it tested. (a test I did not authorise).
But if the same diesel specialist repaired the pump, the test fee of £90 would be offset against the repair and it would cost me £205.
I thought that is was a reasonable price, given another pump was £187.50. So agreed the repair, as in the end it was only £12.50 more than if I ordered a pump myself.
Went into the garage today to check the progress and they said the pump was ready and as I was going into Edinburgh I offered to collect it.
Good job I did, the repairer would not release the pump until I paid for it, even though the garage put it in.
So asked what the bill was , expecting £205 as quoted..........
£280 +VAT!!! Grant Total of £336.00
No way I was paying £336.00, so told him to phone the garage and sort it out, garage said I must of misunderstood him on Friday.
So, enough of this, left the pump at repairers and went back to the garage. Told them to leave the car as it was, put all the parts they removed in the boot and give me the bill for what they had done so far.
Eg removed fuel pump. I was then going to order my own pump and get the car moved to another garage.
Now, they refuse to let me move the car and have boxed it in at the back of the yard.
What rights do I have? Given the fact that they sent the pump away for testing without my approval and I told them I could produce another pump before they sent it away.
Can they basically impound my car and hold me to ransom for an unauthorised repair?
