Eek Metal filings on dipstick - V6CDTi

Oil level light came on the other night and upon checking the dipstick I found what appeared to be tiny metal filings on the dipstick!! Oil level was fine by the way...

Should I be worried? Could I be having main bearing problems?
The engine's done 133k (on the clock, actual mileage est. to 150k) and is due an oil change now (after 12k, 6 months).

She's strong like a stallion is on 5w30 GM oil right now and returns good MPG. No nasty knocks from valvetrain or typical "rod knock".

How long and many miles since last oil and filter change?
How old is the oil sensor?

Oil and oil filter changed on 1st October 2010 at 195,098km (now 213,940km).
Oil level sensor is probably still the one fitted in 2003.

id be doing an oil change again to check the condition of the oil and to see if there is any more in the oil.

if there is more in the oil id have a look at the cams for any obvious signs of ware

Probably the sensor fallen to bits...

Get a magnetic sump plug off ebay - I've just fitted one on my new Vectra so will be interested to see if it picks anything up when I drain the oil next time...

I gave the camshafts a quick look when we changed the injectors and they were like new.

As for the magnetic plug...what is it going to pick up if this engine is entirely of aluminium alloy?

Haha fair point :P The block is aluminium alloy but the working parts will be steel and possibly the sensor too... and the bearings etc...

I would have a magnetic sump plug anyway just for good practice so you can check on the metal filings. But it definately needs a oil and filter change. I would even get twice as much oil and run one set through... drain it... then fill up again.

As for the main bearings... aren't there more than one anyway? You are talking a minimum of 2... I would think there should be 1 or 2 more positioned more centrally on the camshaft also?

You haven't done many miles though... so I would guess its the sensor or something

Realised that other parts were steel (liners) as I posted lol

I have enough oil (cheap 10w-40 meant to go in the 2.2DTI) to do an extra oil change on the 3.0, but seeing as my mechanic doesn't have time to take my car in for one oil change...I can't exactly count on that "test" so to speak.

150k is nothing for an engine like this. They might fail in good old Germany unter Volllast but apart from the cylinder liners this is a very solid, robust engine I really doubt this is a main bearing problem...

Checked the oil again when I got back from Uni and there were tiny black pieces that looked like metal, but disintegrated when I wiped them with my finger. These engines are supposed to go 30k miles or 2 years between oil changes (with 5w30 GM oil) so I doubt this was dirt/soot...or was it? I've done 12k in less than 6 months...can long life oil deteriorate this badly in 12k/6months?? Bear in mind half of that was done in Germany...
