Can Iask your advice? I know it is not normal practice but I have had great sucess running the ground wire all the way back to the battery. Just avoids any chance of ground loops. i have two amps in my system in separate locations and it just seemed easier! They each have there own positive and negative straight to the battery. Do you know why it has become normal practice to just earth to the body? Saves uprating main earths etc....
Sorry I shouldn't of argued with the Electrical Authority on this site. Although don't agree with the wiring statemen you made. Double the circuit CSA and you half the resistance, hence twice the current will flow. But no doubt you know better. But I'll stick with my degree.

You should still uprate the main earths regardless, if for no other reason but to make sure your alternator is given the best chance it can

Personally I've never run earth cables right back to the battery, never seen the point or had any problems with earth loops or interference. As long as the earth connection is good in the first place you shouldn't see any issues. In fact running long earth cables can actually cause interference with the cable acting almost like an aerial and picking up interference from surrounding electrical items on the car.

That said though, the important thing is you get a good earth, how you achieve that is neither here nor there really as long as you get a good connection and its interference free.

To be honest a lot of the technical stuff has stretched my memory tonight, you guys are a hard audience lol

I don't have a degree, but do have several city and guilds do they count?

I apologise Gazza4 I don't remember arguing with you, I am sorry if you think I did, it is not my intention, i look for and try and provide knowledge!!! You are of course right, but I will clairify, I was not talking about resistance, I was talking about the current capacity of the wire. With less resistance more current will flow as you say, but if that current is more than the one wire could take it will burn out!! Hence doubling the wires up to carry more current doesn't really work? Is this correct? If not then of course I will retrat my statement.
