I had similar with my 1.9 cdti (120) estate just returning home from a 100 mile no problem journey - stopped at a junction and warning light came on dash and lost power steering for a few seconds. Try power steering fluid and connections to power steering pump as previously suggested - but in the end replaced the alternator and battery and never had problem since. For some reason if your alternator is on the way out it affects the power steering.

Power steering is electro hydraulic, electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. The pump and reservoir are under the front drivers side wing. Low fluid level will illuminate the dash fault light.

Remove driver's side front wheel and wheel-arch liner. It's behind there

To top up, you'll need to feed a long funnel or similar down from the top, behind the headlight
