    Default HID Ballasts?...

Does anyone know if the ballast unit on HID lights can overheat?... I've fitted mine in foam seats, having had two go already, just had another fail,.. left car for an hour and it lights again. Wondering if the foam is insulating the ballast and overheating

The installation manual for my HID kit says to mount the ballasts in the breezy place.

If the ballasts have got cooling fins, then that's to help keep them cool. Wrapping them in foam isn't a good idea.

Begs the question why you've packed them in foam though.

On my ex police Vectra the reason they were going was that they were not sufficiently protected from weather/water.

Perhaps they are blowing due to not having enough protection?
I ended up almost covering mine completely in wax!
    worked a treat

Well, that's where factory fit ones are. There is a dedicated recess to mount them in. I looked at mine the other day (been there since Sept 09), and there's hardly a mark on them, so they must be quite sheltered from the weather.

I just used some double sided tape, a couple of self tappers, and some cable ties to fix them to the base of the headlights.

    See http://www.vectra-c.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1060742 for more info.
