timing chain rattle then slip 2.0dti y20dth engine

Hi all
Noticed a rattle under load on my vectra last friday night,
took it to the mechanic but chain slipped on the way and car stopped with yellow spanner light on.
Took the rocker cover off today and the chain has a lot of play,
Where do I go from here?

If the chain "slipped" the car would have simply stopped and not even start afterwards. Does the engine run?

Had the same problem with mine.Cost me a lot of money having the camshafts removed to investigate if any damage had been caused.Luckly no valve damage.Cause was failure of chain tensioner.

thanks for the replies, car is gone to the mechanic now to get his verdict.
If an engine is needed what are my options regarding what engine fits?
Woulda vectra b 2.0 dti engine fit?

as far as i know only the last of the vec b 2.0dti had the y20dth in them, think 2001

pre 01 were x20dth

mate o mine rang one afternnon with exactly the same symtoms but on a seat TDi , stuck a new belt kit on and its been spot on ever since ! the fact that it IS trying to start suggests that its not done any damage BUT as always , every car is different ! its upto you but i reckon its worth th risk of sticking a chain kit on it !

i did a cam belt on a clio that had snapped, timed it all up and fitted new belt, luckily it was fine. Unless you want to strip it down, just get a new chain and try it
