Default What is that whistling noise....

I changed my glow plugs on Tuesday evening (what a nightmare) which involved takign the EGR valve off in order to try and get some working space. I only managed to change 3 of the 4 plugs due to the time limit (was approaching 11pm at that stage).

Yesterday, coming back from work, i booted the car in second gear. There was no power loss etc however, at the top end, just before i changed up a gear, there was a very short whistling/squeak noise. I presumed I hadnt tightened the EGR valve up properly so had that out again this morning and back in. All seems fine. Just dove to work and the "squeak/whistle" appears to be happending at the top end of any turbo use.

Now unless i am spectacularly unlucky, I dont think the turbo has miraculously broken over night. As mentioned, there is no power loss so im wondering if its something to do with not having changed all the glow plugs or whether I havent screwed them all the way in properly or something?

any thoughts/comments would be gratefully accepted!

    cheers

Just to add more detail to the story - I had the alternator changed recentl. The car was stull taking a hile to start first thing in morning (in the cold). I changed 3 of the 4 glow plougs mid week now it starts (after 6-7 seconds) but its juddering when its trying to start as opposed to just taking a while like it did before.

That whislting/high pitched noise now only appears to be happening at the top end of 2nd gear - again, has only happened since glow plug change!

    please help people!!

ah, but from where? I took the EGR valve off whilst i was changing the plugs - i have had this off and back on again since. Would air come back through the plugs if not screwed in all the way?

If the plugs are not screwed in correctly or not sealing properly, you would here a "chuffing or popping" kind of noise as the cylinder pressure blows past the plug.

Try putting a little oil around the plugs while it is running, if it is loosing compression you should see the oil get blasted away!

going to be a 2 man job you will need to run hands over the pipes and squeeze and pull to see it it gets worse while some one gives it some revs

Right = took the whole thing apart yesterday, injectors off etc etc and fitted the last glow plug (&tightenmed the others). Its now starting a lot better howver, that very short, very high pitched squeak is still there top ened. The engine management light is on as well which makes me think its the EGR again? anyway of testing? no black crap coming out the back of the car though so maybe its not the EGR?

solved - cleaned EGR out, cleaned sensor and scrubbed EGR gaskets - works like a dream and starts like one now as well! Whistling/squeak must have been emissions escaping between EGR and gasket hence the emissions light appearing on the dash.

    cheers
