Default Noob Request:- Your opinion on a car.....

Always looked at them but always been put off for some reason, Cat C repaired cars? I know there is mixed opinions on here about buying Cat C/D cars but i'm only considering one as I expect to keep it for a good 2 years, if not a bit longer!

As previously mentioned I do around 350 miles a week, so a diesel is the best option. I've sort of decided that although they still have their problems, albeit not as many as the 150, but the 120 CDTI engine would be best suited for my needs.

So down to the matter in hand...... I've spotted 2005 Vec C 1.9 CDTi SRi (120) with 55k on the clock on the AutoTrader with 12 Months MOT and 6 Months TAX, its up for £2890.00.

    Heres the Link:- http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classifi.../200?logcode=p

Having spoke to the dealer selling it, the following has been replaced/repaired:-

    New Bonnet
    New Front Bumper
    New Fog Lights
    New Headlights
    New Grille

Still has the original radiator, no damage to the engine or chassis

    Has also been VIC passed.

Now having looked on the AutoTrader for the same spec with the same mileage and the cheapest I can seem to find is a 04 reg with 50k on the clock advertised for £3750.00.

What are peoples thoughts? My only concern is that its down in Birmingham and would mean a 400 mile round trip wasted if it turns out to be a dog, although I appreciate this is generally the case with all cars I supposed!

    Thanks
    Adam

I am probably getting my wires crossed but looking at what has been replaced (in your post), it looks more like a cat D ? I have to admit to be a bit wary of cat C (not D!) would you have trouble insuring a cat C ?

Indeed, all cosmetic damage to be honest, no structural damage according to the dealer.

Havent looked into insurance yet, but from what ive read most cat c's and d's are insurable due to the original insurance company deciding its un-economical to repair etc... but is repairable, meaning it can be repaired and road worthy again.

The car isnt that cheap being a Cat C car.

Really it should be nearer £2k at the most.

Ok dont wanna be a jobsworth but i will to help out ..... think you can guess by this reply what i do for a living

There are may salvage cats that can apply to Total loss vehicles, the 4 most common are A, B, C and D

Cat A : Example - Complete Burn out - Crush into a cube
Cat B : Example - Car has been written off and has some re-saleable items but CANNOT go back on the road
Cat C : Example - Car written off because repair cost exceeds the current market value of the car and/or vehicle has structural damage (chassis) - can be repaired and would be subject to a VIC check.
Cat D : Example - Car written off as Repair costs close to the market value of the car, or the possibility of further damage being found once work commenced or purely because the repair cost exceeds the salvage percentage set by insurer.

V.I.C Check is exactly what it says - it will only identify that the vehicle that is in for inspection is that TRUE vehicle and not a clone - they are not interested in the repair ...... IT IS PURELY A VEHICLE IDENTITY CHECK

There are many other examples which deter the salvage cat of the vehicle and above is only a rough guide for your consideration - please consider your aternatives before you buy a salvage vehicle ....... IMHO i would only be interested in buying or consider buying a Cat "D"

P.M me if you want any further assistance

When you say that Lee, it makes me think most of the Cat 'C's ive saw on the trader, PH and ebay are well overpriced!!

Kdadidog, not a bad find, not 100% sure on silver Vec's, love the gunmetal grey, suppose its because ive never had a silver car lol

Rich, Thanks for the clarification on the category's. The dealer seems a little too keen to sell, text me a few times tonight which is sort of putting me off!!

So as you say the VIC check is only to check the vehicle is as it says it is, if I was wanting proof of the works etc.. then id have to be looking for receipts from a reputable garage who has carried out the repair works. Which by the sounds of it, the dealer himself has carried out the work.

get an indipendant check bud - those might have been the parts replaced but whos to say the chassis legs havnt been jigged etc, used to work for audi in a bodyshop and its fair to say the newer the car the heavier the damage to write it off etc, you could get a cat c mk3 astra which needs a steering lock and keys etc whereas ive had to replace chassis legs on newer cars all of which will more than likely get sold on without telling anyone etc. 04 plate veccy c was probably touch and go to repair or not, as said get it checked but does seem a little pricey. at least you know its been repaired as opposed to finding out later on.
