    Default Oil!

My car is and has always used 10-40 semi synthetic oil like its suppose to in handbook, is that all i can use? Or can you change it to say 5-30 or fully synthetic?? Does either oil give better smoothness, or harm Your car in anyway? or would you stick to what it says in handbook, or is it ok to change? What is best to if i want more smooth runnings. Thanks

Handbooks normally state GM-LL specification oil, which is fully synthetic

However loads of similar topics about this, once out warranty you can use anything you like; fully synthetic or semi-synthetic, between 0W30 and 10W40
Preference would be for fully synthetic 10W40
If you want to retain the long service intervals, then continue using GM-LL specification oil

So, which is it, your handbook or service book you'e getting the info from?

Your handbook should state to use 5w/30 fully synth.
Your service book is what the garage thought it should have.

Ultimately though, Vauxhall recommended 5w/30 to be used in all Vec-C engines from 2002 to end of build date.

If 10W40 oil was used on previous services, then that was probably incorrect

I caught my dealership using the wrong oil
They initially argued that 10W40 was the correct oil, but VX ordered them to swap it, at their cost

So 5/30 is the correct spec oil! So throughout my cars life its been getting oil that is incorrect for the car? As every garage just copys the 1st info of the 1st service! What is the difference in 5/30. 10/40? Sorry but its always baffled me as they all claim to be fab when you read the back of the jug.

    Yes.

    10w/40 is semi synthetic.
    5w/30 is fully synthetic.

Some people on here use 10w/40 in their engines, along with shorter change intervals.

I use 10/40 semi and change the oil every 5k. Car now just turned 100k.

So alot of oil changes, but regualler oil changes is good for an engine.
