Default headlights coming on by themselves ( gremlins )

My 2007 cdti 120 has developed a very weird fault and i wonder if anyone has suffered this before and cured it

the headlights come on by themselves followed by a click over by the glovebox the green light on the dashboard to say the lights are on also illuminates and the lights deffo come on for a second then go off again as i saw the reflection of them behind a bus this morning flashing on then off,it is main beam not full beam that is coming on and i have wiggled the indicator stalk around to rule out that and that doesn`t seem faulty

they randomly come on and off for a second or so and not activated by speedbumps, potholes etc

the only thing that stops them doing this is to actually turn the headlights on during the day as people think i`m flashing them out at junctions etc when i`m not which is dangerous

    anyone any ideas?

it may be unrelated but my headlights flicker constantly at night and i`ve noticed my alternator doesn`t put out a steady voltage to my battery at tickover it constantly fluctuates between 13.6v & 14.4v constantly bouncing between the two and at 3000 rpm it bounces between 14.6v & 15.3v

could this be related to my electrical gremlins?

    any advice gratefully recieved

was going to ask if you had the light pack ?? but I,m guessing you would know as you would have an Auto option on the light switches ..

ok i did a bit more investigation into this fault and i`ve concluded that the alternator is either over charging or giving out an over current and the lights flashing are a sort of in built safety system drawing the power out of the system if that makes sense ????

how did i conclude this daft idea lol

well when the clicking occurs at the glovebox the headlights come on then off but it only does this above 1500 rpm as soon as i dip the clutch at speed it stops,as soon as i take more of a draw from the alternator i.e switch on headlights or switch on heated rear screen, heater motor etc it stops clicking and the flashing lights stop, turn them back off clicking immediately returns and so does flashing lights, dip clutch it also immediately stops, rev it up stationery clicking and flashing returns as alternator speed is increased

so i`ve concluded it`s a faulty alternator causing this so getting a new one fitted and i will report back but i`m pretty much convinced it is at fault

Driving home, sure the dash display of mileometer was flashing off for a brief moment, more looking when safe revealed it was (and I wasn't going daft).

Kept doing this, then after a while longer the power steering died and corresponding yellow light was "on" on the dash, which was still blinking.

Bit later still (same journey home) the battery/alternator red light came on for short periods of time and a clicking from the glovebox area with a slight dip in revs while it did this.

I'd had a guess at the alternator already, and the above posts seem to confirm this? Is there a simple way to check the alternator?

How much would I be looking at should a new alternator be required?

    Thanks in anticipation...

My vectra (same model) doing exactly the same. Headlights flash randomly with the clicking noise fron behind the glovebox! Had to get out the car a few times to apologise to the drivers in front, I did suspect the BCM as being faulty as seems to be where the clicking comes from. Any how checked the voltage when running and its around the 15.3v mark too. The alternater did pack up last year and I replaced the diodes but not the regulater so maybe it's time to get a new alternater. See if it cures my 'possessed' car. Glad I found this post V33TRA :-) Hope yours is still behaving. Cheers Vic

Well thats what I call a result :-) New alternator fitted and got a rock solid 14.2 to 14.4 volts no matter what's switched on. No random flashing headlights or doors unlocking/locking and windows opening and closing on their own and as a bonus no more flickering headlights which I'd accepted as a vauxhall problem down to the power steering.. Happy owner again and even treated it to a new cambelt, waterpump and pulleys. Mind you they were due with 102000 miles on the clock!
