    Default dipstick snapped!

    checked my oil today and managed to snap the end off the dipstick!.
    Has this happend to anybody else? is it best to remove sump and fish it out before starting engine?(2.2sxi 05plate). thanks

    how long is the bit that snapped? can you not use a magnetic screwdriver down the dipstick tube

    Personally i wouldnt panic about it, there is a gauze over the oil pick up pipe in the sump so it shouldnt pick it up. You could give it an oil change and poke about in the sump with a mechanics extendable magnet and hopefully it should come out on the end of that.

    the snapped piece is around 1 inch (its the flat piece of metal on the end of the dipstick) think i will try the magnetic screw driver, thanks for the reply

    think to get the sump off you need to take a driveshaft out :s

    I think the piece you've broken off may be an aluminium alloy so a magnet wouldn't work.
    I stand to be corrected though !

    mmm sounds like it could be a job for a mechanic, ive owned the car for just under 3 months hopefully he will sort it, ps glad i bought it though looks and drives nice

    How the hell did you do that? If you do go down the magnet route, you can pull the dipstick tube out so you can get better reach or even go in through the drain plug. But as said it could be ally.
