I've broken the alloy security key.

Along with changing my callipers I have managed to break my alloy security key. I have the relevant codes for it in the black box and was wondering where to get a new on? I have seen it on ebay for £38 (+code, ID etc) would this be ok or should I go direct to a Vauxhall stealer?

Are you a member of the AA? if you are phone them and tell them you have broken the key and are stuck, they carry sockets to remove the bolts that are still on the car. Remove them and bin them, VX keys appear to be very soft, or its because they have been put on too tight. Most on here have given up on VX lock nuts and have bought McGards or some other make. I paid £26.95 for a set of McGards off ebay.

I'm a member of the RAC so maybe they have the same sockets, I'll buzz them to find out. The silly thing is I wasn't going to bother putting them back after refitting the wheel, wish I hadn't now. Well you live and learn

Just had to replace mine after it disappeared when the kids were (cleaning the car) £24 from the dealers with the code think they might have knocked a few quid off but weren't to bad. Though cheaper to clean it myself next time i think.

my one broke when i tried the 'stand on the wheelbrace' trick, big mistake! fortunately it still worked if i was careful.

took the car to the workshop at work to have the cambelt done & they broke the key completely, cost £30 from the dealers for a new one. now i am careful & never let tyre dealers near the locking nuts, always put non-locking ones on before i have a wheel removed. someday i will get some more sturdy ones.

i managed to get a fold up + shaped wheelbrace from Lidl for a few quid & use that or a torque wrench & a suitable socket

tony , if you have a car made sfter 05 i believe then the dealers carry a master set of locking wheel nut keys

just ask them to remove them all and go buy mcguard ones

job done
