    Default Insignia/320d/C220/A4

Due to fuel prices I am thinking of going back in the company car scheme and therefore have been test driving new cars.

Just given back an A4 2.0 TDi S-Line 170, and to be honest I didnt really rate it at all. I think the 140 TDi is a better car It's not a patch on the C220 Sport which I had last week.

I also had a brand new Insignia Elite 2.0 CDTi 160 on demo two weeks ago, along with a BMW 320d M-Sport before that.

Really impressed with the latest Insignia, although it is still the same model as I had, 2 years of production have shown excellent improvements and the 2011 model I had was far better than my old 58 plate SE!

BMW was nice and was quick (181bhp) but unless you spec everything, it's pretty bland inside, also I wouldnt want one in winter when we have snow.

C220 CDi Sport was just awesome, drove really well and was about as quick as the BMW.

Totally disapointed with the A4! Very bland to look at, bland to drive and totally gutless for a 170bhp diesel compared to the Mercedes which was 170bhp. I would even go as far as to say the Insignia felt quicker.

I would have then in this order :-

    Mercedes 220 CDi Sport
    Insignia Elite 2.0 CDTi
    BMW 320d MSport

I just would not have the Audi under any circumstances unless work insisted on it.

I can honestly say out of the list the insignia would get my money... especially if it was a cdti 4x4 elite tourer, i don't do badge snobbery, the bm & merc are great cars but the rear drive just don't cut it in the winter.

I never had one issue in the snow in my CLK, where as my friends BMW 320 Coupe got stuck in the smallest amount.

I think Mercedes were wise by fitting limited slip diff's on many of their cars. I didnt get stuck once over the last winter, it was really good, for sure no worse than my Vectra's and Signums I had owned in the past.

Quite impressed with the A4s i've driven, but nowhere near the 3 series.
320d would be my pick of the bunch.

Audi is beautifully built but Clarksons observation of being a c**kmobile is scarily true from my own observation of the drivers of Audi's today. 320d is lovely but small and bland inside to be honest as another member has said IIRC

I too, predictably and sadly will / would pick the Insignia myself in SRi flavour with 18" wheels, Nav and AFL.

I've just tried all of the above and was disapointed with all of them and ended up ordering an Audi A3 Sportback Black Edition with the 140BHP Diesel Engine (stop/start) and the panaramic sunroof. I've had larger cars for as long as I can remember and fancied something smaller. I found it more fun to drive than the A4 and its a lot nicer inside since the facelift back in 2009 (I can't remember which one you had before).

Deffo have the 220 CDI first and at around 180BHP it is one of the most powerful, maybe beaten slightly by the BMW in power. I worked beside I guy who had two Mercs with this engine and not one single problem.

    Gazza4
    Insignia VX-Line Nav CDTI 170.

as far as the c class goes, how about the
    very impressive performance
    C250CDI 204hp (201 bhp) 500 Nm 0-60 7.0 seconds!

    compares to
    C220CDI 170hp (168 bhp) 400 Nm 0-60 7.6 seconds (automatic)

fuel consumption figures are not much different, both are 2143cc units.
