Default question about front top mount components?

Hi guys, so looking at the front shock assembly, you have the plastic bearing carrier, then the metal upper bit which bolts to the car.

I can see the reason my you might replace the bearing carrier, as it can go noisey and wear away. But why would you want to change the metal upper bit? Or would you never really need to change that?

Reason i ask, alot of places do both components as a kit? id have thought youd just need bearing carrier?

    Cheers

    Mike

there is no reason .. other than if your buying all an all new set up it makes it easier to build up the fronts and replace the whole leg ...then sell the old one as a complete unit as well

and likewise if you reverted to your old set up you can refit in an hour all round (4 springs) rather than the time it takes to split and rebuild

    Hey MCD.

I did mine a few weeks back. You only need to replace the bearings in most cases. I got mine from Opel dealership for 56 Euro. steep, i not sure, but genuine parts.

Took me around 15 mins to get the shock out and about 10 to get spring clamps nice and tight so the spring was loose. I then Took the whole shock up to my local garage and he shocked the old nuts off. i swapped out the old bearing and he put the nuts back on for me. I tried the swan spanner and socket method but ended up breaking my torx bit, which s why i ended up going to local mech. threw him a fiver for his time lol...

Makes a massive difference once there done, no more twanging noise from the front.

    Hope this helps somewhat,

    Cheers guys,

Ive had the shocks appart numerous times, and now decided that im going to change the bearing. Ive change arb bushes, and drop links, my springs are eibachs, everything is tight, but i still get this subtle loose rattlyness!

On last strip down and observation, i felt the bearings looked a little loosed, so ive ordered new to fit this week. However, lots of places also offer them as a kit? Hence i got thinking... does the metal top bit also wear out... but.. it appears not!

    Cheers again

    Mike

yes after lowering my car i replaced everying but these because i had a knocking, just to find out it was these, they have rubber inbetween two plates so it can flex and in was this mount that was knocking changed and no more knocking, so yes they can wear. and i found out that the bearings are quite loose when new.

Thanks guys, just to confirm, you are all talking about the metal part above bearing carrier?

So the metal part can go noisey too?
