    Default Info needed on turbochargers

basically i have a 1.8 petrol SRI vectra.

and i am planning on using a second hand turbocharger from a scrapyard.

but I wanted to know if im able to use a turbocharger from a diesel engine aswell, or am i only supposed to use a turbocharger from a petrol engine.

I also wanted to know which manufacturer uses the best turbochargers for power gains.

Have you done your homework on this? It's not as simple as bolting on a turbo - what will control the boost (not your ECU, as it's not programmed to do so). How will you lower the compression ratio?

There was a kit available for the 1.8 to turbocharge it, but I'm sure it was the best part of 4 grand or so...

You'll need to make major modifications to be able to connect up the oil and water feed lines to the block or head, plus change the inlet manifold to give it an entry point for the charged air.

yeah i know where to get a turbo kit from but i may aswell sell my car and get an impreza sti instead of spending £4k+ alone on a turbocharger kit :/

personally i did believe it was just a case of bolting on a turbocharger and intercooler.

i have a couple of mates what have done the same with there cars, bought second have turbochargers and intercoolers, bolted them on and they got results, and none of them had any problems,

except one guy which added just the turbocharger with no intercooler, practially destroyed the clutch. :/

all there cars are older then mine and smaller engines, but i didnt think it would be any different if i did the same on my car

but thanks for the advice jeezy

You would need an oil feed, water feed, new manifold or addaptor to fit the turbo, new pipe work for the intake air, intercooler would be nice and the a waste gate should be fine for controlling boost as long as you are keeping it very low, sort of 5psi level. A diesel turbo would need a vacuum control and has no water cooling so would probably over heat in a petrol exhaust. The diesel turbos aren't designed to deal with high revs, so you would probably over speed the turbo in a petrol.

Lots of things that were once possible on older cars can't be done on newer ones, as the cars get more "intelligent" - On the Vecs you can't even switch the tail light bulbs for LEDS for example. Serious mods like turbos are getting harder and harder to do....
