Default Heater blowing lukewarm at standstill, warmer whilst driving along!

1.9 CDTI Vectra SRi heater problem 55

    Hi

This car has been trouble since I bought it 1 year ago. Engine recon, EGR valve already. 2 months after recon'd engine engine management light comes on. Tech 2 said lambda sensor, changed that, light still on. Latest thought on that is a break in the wiring!

But anyway on to the current and most pressing problem. My heater is blowing lukewarm at best. I did originally think it may have been a thermostat problem but having read a few threads I'm not so sure. The engine temp was usually around the 80 degree mark and pretty steady. Since the heater stopped being hot I have noticed the engine is around 85 and goes up to 90 at standstill or in traffic. This is apparently where it should be.

There is a big difference in vent temperature when I turn the heater temp down so it is switching over ok. Once the engine warms up and when moving along there is heat coming from the vents. Once I stop at the lights it pretty quickly starts blowing lukewarm again.

I have checked the heater hoses that go into the bulkhead and there is very little difference in temp. In fact I'm not even sure there is water in them but I could be wrong.

I was going to get the thermostat changed on monday but I'm not sure now. Someone has suggested it may be water pump related? Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

You could try bleeding the cooling system as its a CDti, when i did my thermostat a few weeks ago this allowed water back in the heater matrix!

Its on the shiney silver pipe at the front of the engine right in the middle.

Undo it and wait till coolant comes out, see if that fixes it!

    Thanks guys

I don't think they put a new water pump on. 31k since recon, 77k in total.

I'll try bleeding it tomorrow. See how that goes and if it doesn't work go for the thermostat and pump check on Monday.

Yep, was the water pump. I think it may have failed ages ago. They have a metal pulley and a plastic impellor. Apparently a common fault is the plastic impellor breaks away but still spins albeit less efficiently. This can cause intermitent and confusing symptoms.

I was charged £240 to replace it. Part cost around £60. I think I may have got shafted.

Epilogue - It is now taking an awful long time for the eng tempo gauge to hit a decent temp. I did 30 motorway miles today, taking it easy, low revs, 65mph, when I arrived it read 75 degrees. I think I need a thermostat as well!

    I hate this car
