Default Help with loss of power

    Hi,
Changed my fuel filter yesterday (05 1.9cdti 150), car running fine after changing filter.

Started car this morning, no hesitation with starting, then got the "spanner light" mmmmm, it went out after about 10 seconds.

Travelling down the local by-pass at about 70-75mph no problem, no warning lights etc. Then had to slow down to about 40mph as HGV pulled out, HGV pulled in, so put car into 3rd gear and accelerated. Car accelerated, seemed sluggish, got to 70mph in 5th gear and car "died"

No power at all, car would only go up to 2000rpm and not over 30mph. With "yellow spanner" light showing.

Pulled over, turned engine off, waited about 2 mins then started engine.
No "yellow spanner" light, engine revs over 2000rpm no problem.

Pulled out, car accelerated fine, then got to 60mph in 5th and tried to accelerate again, engine not having it, as soon as I touched the accelerator pedal "yellow spanner" light straight on and back to driving miss daisy mode ( no revs over 2000rpm and 30mph max)

Only change recently has been the fuel filter, could this be a fuel starvation problem? As the car seems to run ok until I floor the accelerator.

Seems strange to happen straight after the filter change.

    Any ideas guys

    Thanks

Firstly check all wiring connections around the area of the fuel filter just incase you have knocked anything... then check the filter housing is ok (no cracks). then get the code read & take it from there

sounds remarkably similar to my issue - turned out to be the EGR. There is a good how2 on here on removing, cleaning and refitting the EGR valve.

Could also be split pipes/hoses - something that can be checked more easily, but my money would still be on EGR! Ended up replacing mine - cost £72 off ebay for a new one (although I have the 120 engine)

Sounds to me - as pointed out EGR or there is an Air leak somewhere. Any black smoke out of the exhaust?

Thanks for all the comments so far

No black smoke from the exhaust, but have noticed a tiny drip of diesel at the bottom of the filter housing, also the top of the filter housing around and above the screw down ring is damp with diesel.

I will strip it out again in the morning, give the whole unit a good clean and rebuild the filter housing again.
I was worried that I would strip the threads or crack the housing when I put it together the first time, so a bit more force this time.

Would this cause air in the fuel delivery system?

If so that could explain the loss of power etc when the accelerater is floored, due to the sudden demand for extra fuel, as opposed to driving like miss daisy and not putting undue load on the fuel delivery.

    Thanks again

Well, stripped out the fuel filter housing, gave it a good clean and replaced it. No leaks showing now, unit completely dry.

Followed the how2 to the letter, just to be sure I didn't miss anything.
Turned the ignition off and on without starting, filter housing filled with diesel and done the usual bubbling and gurgling thing.

Just one problem, the car will not start at all now

It is just cranking over, no sign of it even attempting to start.

Defo a fuel problem or lack of fuel - Any ideas
