    Default Poor advice.

Been reading lots and lots of posts in November/December/January regarding thermostats.

How many folks took there cars for a thermostat fitting and found it's no different than it was before or was told the thermostat is ok and it's due to the weather?

The advice given on here is not strictly correct as a diesel DOES take longer than a petrol car to get to temp, & a v6 lump gets there quicker than the 4 potter.

If the diesel is driven up a hill this will get the engine to work harder and will get to temp quicker.

I have read many a post by certain posters saying thermostats are shot when there not and i bet many have wasted there money when they didn't need to.

Next cold spell fit a wabasto heater.

Simple way is to use the gauge if it doesn't move quickly, the thermostat has failed open.

And if you took it for a fitting why did the fitter - who I assume is a professional mechanic not diagnose otherwise? That's not the forums fault.

With regards to the statement of deisels taking longer to warm up - I think you'll find that has been said numerous times along side sitting still in heavy traffic causes the same effect as driving up hill.

Normal operating temperature is between 85-90C- under that the thermostat has jammed open, and if it is creeping over 90C either the thermostat has jammed shut or something has went in the coolant system.

If you have other theories why not share them?

First thing I noticed with the Derv Devil aside from the nice small(ish) fuel bill!

It gives me happy thoughts knowing it takes longer, ergo less heat is wasted, ergo more efficient! :P Sorry Petrolians, I was once one...!

As said people should concentrate less on how long it takes to get upto temperature... the ambient temperature will affect that anyway, and more on what the optimum temperature reached is. If its 70 or less then you know you have a problem
