Default Problem with steering wheel controls....

    Hi all,

i hope those who have fitted aftermarket h/units with the steering wheel control adapter can help me out on this.

i've bought a new headunit the other day and from the same shop i got the steering wheel adapter kit - specific for the a jvc unit so i thought it should be a simple case of plug and play and i'd be away.

let me explain in full so that i give as clear a picture as possible:

i bought the single DIN fascia adapter from VX which came with the wiring (n.b. if anyone needs to purchase a signle DIN adapter i would highly recommend going straight to VX, £25 for the fascia plate and wiring harness! the shop i bought the stuff from wanted 30 quid for a black or silver fascia plate alone!!!)

anyway, the wiring harness from VX plugs directly into the wiring coming out the dash, this gives you your speaker and power leads and also a red adapter for what i presume is the steering wheel controls.

the black and brown connectors are then plugged in the corresponding connectors for the steering wheel control harness and then finally the actual headunit connectors get plugged into those - ALOT of wiring!!

now i've plugged everything in that needs to be plugged in but the steering wheel controls don't work.

do i need to earth the black box for the steering wheel control harness, there is a loose wire on it which i can only presume needs to be earthed, but its purple!! i've tried earthing it with no luck!

i should add that this black box converts the wiring that intercepts the power wires into a 3.5mm jack that plugs into the headunit.

the red connector block which is part of the vx wiring harness isn't connected into anything, do i need to do something with that? there is no way that the steering wheel controller harness can plug into this red block as the red block is much larger.

JEEEZ....this is turning into an essay!!!

i'll post some pics if it helps, but i'm hoping someone can tell me that i've missed something very simple and then i'll feel silly but at least it'll be easy to sort it out.

    cheers

Not really sure mate, i would earth that purple wire through a test light to avoid any damage in case it gives out a + voltage. If it then works connect to a proper earth.

Harry, I fitted a Sony head unit & got a Connects2 adapter for steering controls & display. I had bother with it not working, until I read instructions again. The amp remote wire from the head unit had to be connected to one of the wires to get it to work. No problems after that (apart from trying to feed everything back into dash).

Last week had to take all out again to take a feed off the remote feed for my new sub.

cheers Ian, but i didn't get any instructions with either the vauxhall harness or the steering control harness.

unless you mean the instruction manual for the actual h/unit itself?

I meant instructions for the control adapter. The connects2 adapter I used plugged into the main harness, then Sony headunit harness plugged into other end.
I did not need to use the harness supplied with the facia adapter.
The amp remote wire was the only wire I had to connect up.
Have you got any details about the control adapter?
Have you tried searching for instructions on internet?

went through the installation guide of the headunit, and along with ipod connection, cd changer connection etc etc there is a little paragraph about OE steering controls. it says, plug this to this and this to that....which i have done, it doesn't even say anything about grounding the purple wire.

i posted my problem on an AV forum at the end of a long thread about the jvc avx2 so hopefully i'll be able to sort this soon.

it's no problem really, but seeing as i've got the necessary bits i want it working!

i'll check for instructions online tonight - didn't think of that Ian, cheers

Internet is useful for some things, I've recently got a JBL bass tube from Halfords, no instructions. Managed to download them from JBL site

went back to the shop this morning and i finally have the steering wheel controls working with my jvc hedunit!!

the problem......no power going to the interface module for the steering wheel controls!! quite strange! the module is wired to receive power when the ignition is turned on, but apparently there was no power from that particular wire because the headunits are permanently powered!

the guy ended up connecting the power wire for the steering control module to the electric aerial output (i think) so it's powered when the stereo is on.

if anyone else is having trouble then maybe this could be the solution.

I think mine is powered by the cigarette lighter, suppose it's a case of getting power to it somewhere. Only problem is i can't get mine out to have a look! So many people wonder how mine works I'm getting a complex!

Problem for me when I fit my new headunit with stereo adaptor then !

Off topic slightly, but was it difficult to feed all of the wires down the back of the stereo as I've also got to install an Autoleads phone mute kit in mine shortly.
